ICE CLIMBING
ice climbing in Reisadalen
Reisa Valley offers ice climbing of all kinds, from extremely difficult and remote frozen Arctic waterfalls to easy, accessible icefalls close to the lodge. Reisa Lodge sits in the middle of many climbing areas, which makes it a good base for climbers who want to plan their own days on the ice.
Season and conditions
The first ice usually forms in November, once temperatures have stayed below zero for several days in a row. Thin ice glaze starts to build on wet rock and small waterfalls in the valley, and it grows a little more each day.
- Mid-November: The outdoor ice-climbing gym is usually ready for climbing (see photos below).
- From December: The big lines usually come into condition, including waterfalls like Imofossen and Little Mollis deep in Reisa National Park.
Where to climb
- Near the lodge: There’s a climbing arena about a 5-minute walk from the car, with lines for all levels. It has easier icefalls and is a good place to warm up or start the trip.
- Outdoor ice-climbing gym: Open from around mid-November, before the bigger lines have formed.
- Reisa National Park: Big, remote waterfalls like Imofossen and Little Mollis, usually climbable from December.
- Throughout the valley: Lines in all kinds of difficulties and shapes, from short beginner routes to hard, technical Arctic waterfalls.
Guided ice climbing
if you want to experience this extraordinary or unusual activity, we can arrange for you a guided ice climbing session, suitable for any gender, age, or fitness level. Price and availability on request.
Climbing on your own
You don’t need a guide to climb here, and the lodge works well as a base for self-guided climbing. Ice conditions change from week to week with the temperature, so please contact us before your trip and we’ll tell you what’s in condition. We’re happy to share what we know about the area.
If you’d like to climb with a guide, or bring someone who has never tried ice climbing, contact us for availability.
